Valentine's day is for showing your love to others. Everyone runs out and buys cards to hand out. I don't particularly like buying cards. The cards are very expensive for paper that you just toss later. I sometimes find the cards to be a little generic as well.
I did a search for Dungeons and Dragons valentines. Wizards of the Coasts made some cards for Dungeons and Dragons. The jokes are good but I wasn't enamored with them. The artwork on the beholder for example didn't look as good as other artwork I'd seen. In searching for something better I found an interview with Jessica Sheron. The card she created was awesome. The kobolds running were based on a game idea her boyfriend had.
I didn't want the kobolds but I'm also not an artist. Replacing the kobolds was not an option. But I did know of a collection of artists that could help me out. OpenGameArt.Org accepted submissions from artists all over the world. The material is licensed in a fashion to allow reuse. There is no style requirement for uploading but I knew there was enought content generated in the Liberated Pixel Cup to create the scene. Ideally the female character would be an elf sorcerer like my wife's characters. Creating LPC characters can be time consuming as clothes, ears, hair, and weapons are all separate. I settled on using the example princess.
I was statisfied with the results. I haven't included the inside card image. I didn't verify the license on the heart I used and found I could not make it available online. The design simply had a heart and the two heroes looking at one another inside it.
