I just tried gif2ps followed by ghostscript conversion to pdf. The pdf
file is much larger (3K gif => 30K pdf). Maybe one of these programs is
doing something suboptimally but my money is still on the gif.

I generally use xpdf myself but that's not the problem. For one not
everyone has pdf viewing configured in the web browser. Two even if it
is configured, it has different controls. Three I still don't get the
incremental viewing like an image.

Most importantly does it solve the problem? Will it start fully zoomed
out and not require scroll bars? I don't have an integrated pdf viewer
for netscape 3.x so I don't know for sure but I suspect it will start
zoomed in to a "readble" size.

Basically I want to web site to be "native" to the web not a refugee.
Javascript and java are somewhat preferable to pdf. (Pdf is best
for online books/magazines that need precise formating IMHO.)
