The Grand Duchy of Stac Overview: The dual monarchy of the Grand Duchy of Stac is virtually incomparable in the rest of the world. Duke Galatin and Duke Thorin have worked in unison for the last 46 years in bringing a wonderful peace to the land. In the years before the duo, another pair ruled, and before that, another pair. For five hundred years, the country has been led by a unified pair of dukes. With a large portion of its population coming from the Grey Peaks, the Grand Duchy has a fairly well defended country. The Grand Duchy of Stac has a well-established system of work in mines and along the Angian river. Combined with the abilities of the dwarves, elves, and the most talented of humans, the workmanship of the craftsmen in the country is world-renowned. There is simply no comparison in arms and armor. The Grand Duchy of Stac is on relatively peaceful terms with the Theoren Nomads, trading their fine weapons and armor for non-aggression. The loose alliance they hold with the Kingdom of Ganthes has lasted for many years, and to the north in the Land of the Cyrean Lords, the Grand Duchy of Stac has had sketchy relations. At times the strifes between the countries have emerged in full-fledged war. Other times the individual combats have been little more than bar brawls. Over the mountain range, the other countries have little to do with them. Religious beliefs have been restricted over the land, but most aren't overly discriminated against for their beliefs. Only three major shrines are located within the country, that of Yttris, the God of War, Grantis, Lord of Justice, and Tramere, God of Prosperity. Other religions have no representation within the country, and could only come and preach their word under the approval from both Dukes. However, Duke Galatin and Duke Thorin have been extremely adamant about the restriction of religion. They say it brings them closer to the higher realms. Government: Two-party Monarchy (well-established, about as old as the Kingdom of Ganthes). Population: About 800 000 (30% human, 50% dwarf, 15% elf, 5% other) Armed Forces: About 30 000 troops spread evenly around the borders. The troops are well trained and diverse. Since a large contingent of them are dwarven, cavalry is light, but infantry is heavily armored. Also, instead of bowman, or even crossbowmen, the Grand Duchy of Stac makes use more of artillery, mobile seige weapons, than of the smaller weapons. In the army about 60% are armed infantry of 3rd level in plate mail weilding axes and swords evenly; 20% are used in artillery, 4th level split evenly between catapults, canons, and ballistae. 15% are armed cavalry on light warhorses in studded leather, with bows, swords and shields. The last 5%, a group of 1500 troops make up the elite strike force of the Dukes. These are all at least 10th level warriors and 3rd level priests of Yttris. They take care of most disturbances within the Duchy, moving all over within the country. However, they rarely trouble themselves with the offensive. They defend all the major castles and keeps but rarely will pursue others outside of the country. So they might, rout an army out of the country, but will not follow the army outside of the borders. Since there is virtually no connection with the sea, the Grand Duchy has no naval army, unsurprisingly.
