From: ROBIN1SK@VAX1.ACS.JMU.EDU The Chiroptera "Remember, bats are only rats with wings..."(I know its not exactly right, but you know the quote!) -Catwoman; Batman Returns At the time when Gaia sat all of her childrenin a great circle before her and she gave them thier job, Raven spoke and said: "Great Mother, we are very happy with the job you have given us, but we are creatures of the day, for we grow weary from our work and must sleep. We cannot watch you skys in both the night and the day." Gaia thought about this for a while and said: "I hear you my child and understand your struggle. I shall have to find one of your bretheren to watch over my night sky. For I understand that you are not a creature of luna, you rise with helios and sleep with him too." Turning to the circle..."Which one of you, my children is willing to watch my skys under Luna?" There arose great concer amoung the children for they could not figure out who could possibly carry this burden. then suddenly from the back, a rather diminutive voice spoke and said: "Mother, may I serve you in this roll?" All turned to lookand were surprised to see, bat. The garou in thier usual arrogance simply laughed at bat, but bat was completely serious and frowned at garou saying: "Why do you laugh at me cousin?" Laughing:"You could not seriously hope to protect mother. Look at you. You are small and weak. You have no power. How could you seriously hope to defeat any of gaias enemies...?" Bat interupted: "Ahhhh...that is where you are mistaken cousin. I have the night and the sky. You are bound to the land, while we are free to roam the heavens. I know the secrets the night holds and that is your weakness." These statements enraged garou and he stomped off into the forest. Gaia looked at bat and smiled saying: "Okay my child...the night sky is yours. Guard it well, because the Wyrm is more active under Luna's maddness. Be careful. I give you my power. I have faith in you..." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Of all of the other bete, the Chiroptera have the most strained relationships with the garou. However, they were probably the least hit by the War of Rage. The garou see them as creatures of the Wyrm because of their resemblance to Gangrel's using protean. Also, because of this fact Gangrels respect the chiroptera and are more likely to have a good relationship with them. thus, the difficulty on all dealings with a Gangrel vampire are -2 and it costs half the points to buy a gangrel ally. They also get a bum wrap, because the totem Bat is a wyrm totem.(I found this out after I started writing this. Needless to say, I was not a happy camper!) Chiroptera are creatures of the night...plain and simple. Though sunlight does not physically hurt Chiroptera, they are very lethargic and disoriented during the day and all difficulties go up by 3 during daylight hours. Chiroptra take no totems, simply because they feel that they don't need it. In homid form, they are usually thin, lanky humans, with a rather high pitched voice, even males, and fair eyesight. It is not uncommen that in homid form chiroptera need glasses. Since, bats are found all over the world, there is no particular nationality that is found most often. Also, like the Gurahl there Bat form takes on the appearance of the bats indigenous to where they are from. (e.g. A chiroptera from brazil may resemble a flying fox...etc.) There are not really any official tribes, but bats of the same species tend to stick together. However, there is one group that stnads out from the rest. The Sanguine Society As the title suggests, this is a group entirely made of vampire bats. I haven't exactly figured out what I want to do with this yet, but when I do I will post it. Any suggestions? I kind of think I may go with a kind of wannabe aboniations type thing, but I am not sure. Gifts: Being that the Chiroptera have a very strong connection to Gaia, they are privy to most of the Garou gifts, but they do have a few of their own. Wail of the Banshee(Level 3): Simular to the X-man Banshee's mutant power, the Chiroptera learning this gift is able to use sound as a weapon to attack foes. This can also be used to create hypnotic effects, helping other fly, etc...(Sidenote: I am quite sure that a lot of you guys read X-Men comics and you have seen the stuff that Banshee can do, so you and your ST work it out!) System: Basically, since this is a rather high level gift I am going to say that it becomes innate and nothing must be spent, but for the individual actions that the character wants to do, he should roll his gnoisis or any other relevent roll to see if he is physically or spiritually able to do it. I have yet to think of any others, but plan to be writing some more, so let me know if any one has some suggestions. Traits: Homid: They tend to be rather short in stature and with thin frames and builds. Most have rather high piched voices. It is almost impossible to find a bass pitched Chiotera male voice. They usually do not have good eye sight. Most wear glasses or contacts. No trait adjustments Crinos: In this form, the Chiroptera basically turns into a giant man-bat. (To get a better idea of what this might look like look for an episode of Batman: the animated series, where there is a man bat floating around.) They cannot talk in this form. They can only emit series of high pitched shrieks. They get large wings. Large ear. They can fly in this form, but must check there strength to see if they can hold themselves in the air. Strength: +2 Dexterity: +3 Stamina: +4 Apearance: 0 Manipulation: -3 Intimidation: +2 Bat Form(Sorry, haven't thought of a name yet!): In this form, they look like a large version of the type of bat from from what ever part of the world they are from. Strength: -1 Dexterity: +2 Stamina: +3 Manipulation: -3 -4 to all percepiton difficulties ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Suggestions: From: Christophe Bachmann > The Sanguine Society I'd rather make them the fighting arm of the chiroptera. In real world, Vampire bats are rather smallish things, whose only real danger is in their number and the diseases they vehicle. So rather than make them abomination types, I'd give them well thought gifts and a greater cohesion than the regular types, making them frightful for number and good concertation. (Perhaps an ultrasonic based pseudo-telepathy, giving them always the advantage of concerted tactics.) > Crinos form I'd rather say a human sized man-bat. Crinos gain 2 Sizes from the human, and 4 from the average Lupus, so they are Size +2. The Chiroptera being average Size -4 should get at least two sizes less than the Wolf-Crinos and so be average human size. However you could give big chiroptera a +1 Size or small chiroptera a -1 Size from the normal. As for flight I'd rather let them glide with a loss of 10% height, and make them take a Talent, Aerology, so that on a roll of Wits + Aerology they may gain a +3% per success, in effect gaining height if they make 4 successes. Target number depending on manoevers planned, and wind conditions. The more steady wind, or the less gusts, and the less manoevers wanted, the lower the target number. On a botch they stall, and must make a difficult roll to get back portance before they reach earth level. That is not realistic as real chiroptera are not gliders, but as big a creature as a man-sized bat must rely on gliding, because it's muscles if not magically powered are just plain insufficient. > Bat form Name : Pteron ? I think that one is not well thought out. I don't have the rule books handy, but I think the Bat will be Size -3 to -5, eventually -2 for the biggest of them. So they should lose at least 2 to 5 points strength. (However they may gain strength to make up a little for that. The -1 would so be OK for the biggest, but the average sized european bat would be tremendously strong.) So I think you should make at least three tribes, the flying foxes, biggest of the Chiropterans, the medium-size, and the small ones, each with different adjustements. And as the Stamina is very high you should at least cross off the Bruised and Hurt columns in order to account for the much smaller size. However I would rather give them a very high Dexterity, +3 or +4 in order to have them Dodge like devils, and turn on a dime in flight, like real bats do, but downscale their Stamina very much. Leaving them the columns in order not to have them wiped away too lightly but taking a +0 to -3 penalty to Stamina to represent their inherent frailness. From: "Louis M. Nicoulin III" Not too bad to start. The story could use a little work. An interesting twist could be that the bats came over to Gaia from the Wyrm (like a reversed BSD). Maybe the CoG had something to do with it. Also, that would explain why the bat is a wyrm totem. This would further justify the Gangrel connection (and exasperate the Garou opinions of them). The Sanguine Society could could be a group returning to the wyrm. Good idea. As for gifts, try to be specific. If I come up with any, beyond the obvious ears of the bat and patagia (from Book of the WYrm), I'll post them. The Stat adjustments are not unreasonable, except the perception adjustment. It should be reduced. Also what kind of tribal weakness were you thinking of? Good luck. Louis. From: 12403928 > Gifts: Hmm.. Nice gift.. spend a point of rage, scream and To harm roll Stamina(for pulmonar resistance)+Perfomance and you inflict a health level per sucess (dif 6) .. it isn't agravated can be soaked (but add dif. if you have any acute sense, auxpex or not homid nice hear sense) if you score 3 health levels the victim/s (hey i forgot put range & radius) are deaf (sp?) for some days and if you make 5 they are deaf permanently (sp?) (no problem if u can regenerate the damage) The radius is some yards (about 20) (No super powers in a mere 3 level gift ;) Call brother in Gaia (level 2) The Chiroptera spend a point of Gnosis and roll Charisma+Primal Urge (dif variable 4 if there are bats around ,8 if the bats are some milles away) for every sucess he calls a small group of bats (if the bats are big the group is small and viceversa) he has a relative control of them (if the bats are kinfolk he has almost total control) The control last for a scene. From: Richard Scott In the bat form, to make it consistent with the Garou bonuses (don't know about other tribes from player's handbook) perhaps make Perc +1 and say, lower difficulties by 1? At least, I think that would be consistent. Oh yeah, and it is role, not roll, for a minor spelling mistake. Bat form name = chirops, maybe?
