From: Marizhavashti Kali I've been reading GURPS: Voodoo and it has done twisted my mind. You see, Caine was an Initiate of great power (10, at least) who attempted to create a powerful new form of Spirit Warrior which wouldn't have to summon the spirit and who could use the conferred power for longer and longer periods of time. So, he conceived of a way to permanently bind a spirit to the body. By using a combination of the Path of Health and the Path of the Spirit, he managed to find a means of using blood as a binding material. The next problem lay: where to get the spirit. He discovered his answer in a most simple way: many people believed that the human soul had many parts, so he used the ritual he had developed to convince part of the soul that the body had been slain, and then bind the newly freed ghost to the body indefinitely. Part of the soul never left, which provided the motivating force. The part which did conferred its advantages upon the physical body, but this had its price: the blood was consumed to fuel the bond. To maintain the empowerment provided by the spirit, the new spirit warriors had to drink more blood. In addition, the investments provided consumed the energies and blood of the recipient even faster. As it turned out, the bonding capabilities of the Blood could be spread to other humans, thus transforming them as well. Unfortunately, it also turned out that, for the blood to maintain its qualities, only a fraction of the power could be passed along. Other side effects included the ability to tie another's spirit to one by feeding the other blood. Yet another was the ability to consume the empowering spirit by drinking of the substance which binds it. By taking it all into yourself, you take the spirit, and increase your own power. This power, to Caine's dismay, corrupted its recipients rapidly. Now, thousands of years later, Caine's creations war with each other rather than fight what is now known as the Mayombe and the Devourers. Instead they wage their "Jyhad" to the detriment of all else. Oh, incidentally, the first three of Caine's new breed of Spirit Warriors were Enoch, Zillah and Irad.
