From: s.johnson107@genie.geis.com The Lost Books of... When King James commissioned the creation of his Great Bible, gathering together all of the appropriate ancient books. His Commissioners, firmly under the guiding hands of various Technomantic factions, brought together, translated and created the bible. However they left out a number of Books. Some of these Books were lost, difficult to find or unnecessary to the purposes of the Commission. A great many however were of paramount importance to the various supernatural forces then and since loose in the Darkness of the World. The best known is, of course, the Kindred's Book of Nod. Supposedly penned by Caine himself. Of lesser renown but perhaps equal importance are the various Books of the Shadow, dealing as they do with the various Clans and the eternal Jyhad. Many mages and scholars seek these lost books in order to piece together the fragmented understand currently held of the world before the current era and seek clues as to the eventual future towards which humanity and others are headed. Little is known of some of these Books beyond the fact of their existence, others are presumed lost while a handful have been taken from mortal eyes and must be sought out in the Shadowlands, the Deep Umbra or even more difficult and terrifying places. Many of the volumes I list below have little more then their name known, others are eagerly sought after, others shunned by all but the Nephandi. Beware in seeking out these Tomes of lost lore, for often the price of acquiring them is much more then a mage believes it to be. The Book of Lilith - Only a handful of ancient texts mention this Book, and then only with references to it's being condemned by The One, The Name, God, Gaea, The Goddess as containing too much knowledge for mere mortal eyes to see out minds to comprehend. For many mages, especially those who have read even a part of the Book of Nod, this Book is an almost irresistible temptation. The Book of Able - It is said that after Caine slew his brother and then fled that God wept tears which rained down on the body of Able and resurrected him to see God in all his full majesty, glory and power. What happened next is unknown but a great many mages would like to discover the rest of the text in order to find out. The Book of Eve - The contents of this Book are a great mystery, especially since it is generally held that Eve could neither read nor write. It is rarely mentioned as well in other texts of the era or subsequently, just enough so that it's known that it did exist. The Book of Gaea - Amongst ancient Garou Theurges there is a tradition that shortly after the sundering of the world into it various parts and the rise of the Gauntlet, long before humanity invented agriculture but shortly before the War of Changers. Gaea herself appeared at a Caern during a most holy ritual and spoke to the assembled elders. The oral tradition of what Gaea said, including the Ritual of Inviting Gaea into the World, were passed down by word of mouth until some time shortly after humanity invented agriculture. With agriculture came writing and human Kinfolk copied down the oral traditions of the ancient Theurges to create the Book of Gaea. Then came the Impergium and those Kinfolk who knew of the Book hid it away from their Garou brothers and sisters as an act of defiance, only to die when questioned. In the modern era their is a legend that the Book of Gaea contains the secret of victory in the fast approaching apocalypse. Thus ancient Theurges seek clues as to where the Book might be hidden, sending young packs of Garou on obscure quests in attempts to find fragments of the Book. Also many mages that know of it seek it as well. The Book of Ialdabaoth - The Dark Book of utter damnation, though many mages wish that all copies of this Book had been destroyed it is obvious that some must still survive. It is rumored that a mage risks her Avatar simply by opening the Book, reading it is grounds for a Gilgul. According to Order of Hermes and Celestial Chorus mages as well as ancient records the book is a primer on evil and contains a ritual to summon Ialdabaoth to the person foolish enough to perform it. Both the Traditions and Technocracy expect a mage to vigilantly seek and destroy and copies they discover. The Book of The Name - In the beginning there was the One, few mages or scholars knowledgeable enough to know that disagree on that single fact, it's everything else that followed which creates the often violent arguments. All would like to find this Book, but none have. According to legend The One was sundered by the act of recognizing something apart and distinct from itself and in the act of naming it brought about the sundering. This is, of course, the subject of violent debate amongst those who count themselves as knowledgeable on the subject, but all agree that, in theory, at the instant of the sundering The One discovered the The Name for itself as a whole. Since that time in the Deep Umbra there have existed rumors and legends of The Name, an Umbrood of extreme power who has kept itself separate from all others save carefully chosen lesser being which it grants the rare visit too. The true standing of The Name in the Court of Shadows in it's various guises is unknown but those rare mages which have achieved some standing in the Court of Shadows have reported disturbing things. Currently the Book of the Name is rumored to be in fragments scattered throughout the Umbra. What is in the Book is unknown, but a great many mages would like to find out. The Book of Names - In some early belief systems the power of Names was held supreme and with the spread of such beliefs throughout the ancient world such a Book was created though how is still a matter of some question. Finding The Book of Names is also a matter of some question, though many mages seek to find it because through the use of and magic of the true name contained within the Book it is believed that all true magick becomes coincidental as regards paradox. The Book of Judgment - This is rumored to have existed long before humanity created writing and will exist long after the Tellurian has been changed beyond all current recognition. In theory the Book of Judgment will contain the written record of all creatures great and small throughout the Tellurian, they're lives past, present and future. The existence of the book of Judgment is a rumored amongst mages because of a number of cryptic remarks between Oracles recorded by certain Celestial Chorus mages during the Mythic Age and two unconfirmed reports from Dreamspeaker sources. No mage, short of an Oracle, has ever seen the Book of Judgment much less touched it. Many mages would like to peruse it's pages however. The Book of Ibrahim - Tradition has it that Ibrahim (Abraham) handed to his son Joseph a written record which became the basis of the five books of Hebrew history that Moses penned while wandering in the desert with the tribes of Israel. Beyond that little is known of the Book of Ibrahim, but many Postulants and hopeful Postulants have been recorded as seeking the Book of Ibrahim. The Book of Daenna - This is the story of the Romani, the Gypsies and thus is almost completely unknown to those outside of Gypsy Blood. A handful of mages of Gypsy Blood Awakened within the Traditions have spoken of so it is known to exist. But if in a written form or still as part of an oral tradition is unknown to outsiders. Since many Gypsies know many of the players, powers and secrets of the supernatural and other things outside the comfortable blindness of the sleepers it must be presumed any record of theirs would contain astonishing insights. The problem of extracting such a record from the Romani is another matter entirely.
