From: cfleming@unicomp.net (Cary Fleming) I need some people to playtest the attached rule suggestions. These are targeted at people who enjoy role-playing and are fans of David Eddings. The enclosed rules are for GURPS and AD&D. I would appreciate any suggestion anyone can give me. Please try them and let me know how they work for you. Cary Fleming cfleming@unicomp.net A TREATMENT OF THE WILL AND THE WORD By Cary Fleming The Will and the Word is a system of magic created by David & Leigh Eddings for the Belgariad and Mallorean series. The Will and the Word (hereafter denoted by WW) is a lifelong experience for its wielders. It does not confer an extended life such as that of Belgarath or the other Disciples of Aldur. The extended life was a gift from Aldur himself. WW can be used to do just about anything that can be imagined. The first time a user tries to do something with WW they will not necessarily be successful, but this does not mean they will utterly fail either. As the user attempts to duplicate a previous spell it will get gradually easier. Also, assistance from an experienced wielder of WW can help assure success. If time is not an issue, success can be guaranteed when a mentor is available to correct small errors. Suggested guidelines for use with Steve Jackson Games' GURPS: Requires Magery Each spell defaults to IQ-6+(Magery-1) Spells are Mental-Very Hard Eidetic Memory supplies the normal magic bonus 10 successful uses of a spell supply 1 point to be applied to that spell Spell similarity is left to the GM's discretion Suggested guidelines for use with TSR's Advanced Dungeons & Dragons: A WW wielder is a special type of cleric Character can have Wisdom x Square Root of Level spells Each spell has a difficulty modifier associated with it A spells modifier starts at -10 For a spell to be successful a roll must be made at Wisdom + Spell Modifier After 10 successful castings of a spell the spell modifier goes up by one All spell modifiers go up by 1 every 3 levels (e.g. 1-3 = +0, 4-6 = +1, 7-9 = + 2) Spell similarity is left to the DM's discretion I hope these guidelines help include WW into your own role-playing campaigns. Thank you to David & Leigh Eddings for such a wonderful world and such incredible people.
