Any complaints about this usage should be directed to Paramount Pictures, Inc. =============================================================== GENERAL INFORMATION ------------------- The reason I am creating this supplement is for all of the fans of Trek who want to "Boldly Go Where No One Has Gone Before" by creating their own adventures in a role-playing setting, but were distressed by the demise of the "Star Trek" role-playing game by FASA several years ago. No FASA game, module, or supplement should be considered to be "canon" for these rules. However, FASA "Star Trek" gaming material may be useful for background material and adventure seeds, and can provide other information. No infringement upon any of FASA's copyrights and/or trademarks is intended by the creation, publication, or distribution of this work. This game, unlike the FASA game, is designed to reflect the time period of ST:TNG, ST:DS9, and ST:VOY. These shows are still active and growing, and as such are fertile ground for role-playing games. However, it should be possible to run Classic Trek campaigns with minor alterations to the rules. --------------------------------------------------------------- In addition to this work, materials required include: ----------------------------------------------------- Several six-sided dice, paper, pencils, and a good imagination GURPS: Basic rulebook, Third Edition, Revised The following GURPS books may be extremely useful: -------------------------------------------------- GURPS: Aliens GURPS: Psionics, Second Edition GURPS: Space, Second Edition GURPS: Ultra Tech, Second Edition GM's may find the following books useful for adventure seeds: ------------------------------------------------------------- GURPS: Space Atlas 1: The Old Frontier Worlds GURPS: Space Atlas 2: The Corporate Worlds GURPS: Space Atlas 3: The Confederacy GURPS: Space Atlas 4: Phoenix and Saga Sectors GURPS material used to help write these rules: ---------------------------------------------- GURPS: Basic rulebook, Third Edition, Revised GURPS: Aliens GURPS: Fantasy Folk, Second Edition GURPS: Psionics, Second Edition GURPS: Space, Second Edition GURPS: Special Ops GURPS: Supers, Second Edition GURPS: Ultra-Tech, Second Edition GURPS: Vampire the Masquerade "Roleplayer" magazine (various issues) "Pyramid" magazine (various issues) =============================================================== RESEARCH INFORMATION -------------------- Notes on the research: Material was researched using mostly "canon" material. If a question regarding some aspect of a rule, race, or item arose that had not been detailed within canon material, some non-canon material was used to answer it, but only if it did not contradict known canon information. "Official" Canon information includes: -------------------------------------- Classic "Star Trek" (The Original Series) episodes "Star Trek" (The Original Series) Animated episodes "Star Trek" Movies I through VI "Star Trek: Generations" "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episodes "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" episodes "Star Trek: Voyager" episodes Classic Trek is the 79 original episodes. Also included are the 24 animated episodes that were shown somewhat later. "The Cage" is also original material. Together, there are 99 tapes in the Paramount-authorized video releases of the original series. The animated episodes finish out the first five year mission of the original Starship Enterprise with Captain Kirk as the commanding officer. I know some fans do not consider animated episodes to be canon. It is the belief of the current editor that all broadcast stories should be considered canon. If this disagrees with the way you see it, simply delete references to animated episodes. In addition, only broadcast material is considered canon, except where noted. Classic Trek movies include all of the movies with the crew of the original Starship Enterprise. This includes: "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" (also called: "Star Trek I: The V'Ger Incident") "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" "Star Trek III: The Search For Spock" "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home" "Star Trek V: The Final Frontier" "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country" "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episodes include all of the episodes broadcast on UPN or in syndication. "Star Trek: The Next Generation" movies include "Star Trek: Generations", as well as any future movies with the original crew of the Enterprise-D. "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" episodes include all of the episodes broadcast on UPN or in syndication. "Star Trek: Voyager" episodes include all of the episodes broadcast on UPN or in syndication. =============================================================== ABBREVIATIONS ------------- Abbreviations that will be used in these files are: --------------------------------------------------- "Star Trek" (The Original Series) = ST:TOS or TOS. In cases where the published material contradicts episodes, episodes are considered to be more accurate. Current reference materials given in the "Writer's Guidelines" are: "The Klingon Dictionary" by Marc Okrand (Pocket Books) "Star Trek Chronology" by Michael and Denise Okuda (Pocket Books) "Star Trek Encyclopedia" (Pocket Books) by Michael Okuda, Denise Okuda, and Debbie Mirek "Star Trek: The Next Generation Technical Manual" by Michael Okuda and Rick Sternbach (Pocket Books) -------------------------------------------------------------- Non-Canon material used to help fill in the gaps includes: ---------------------------------------------------------- "Imzadi" (a ST:TNG novel) by Peter David (Pocket Books) "The Making of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" by Judith & Garfield Reeves-Stevens (Pocket Books) "Mr. Scott's Guide to the Enterprise" by Shane Johnson (Pocket Books) "The Nitpicker's Guide for Classic Trekkers" by Phil Farrand (Dell Paperbacks) "The Nitpicker's Guide for Next Generation Trekkers" by Phil Farrand (Dell Paperbacks) "The Nitpicker's Guide for Next Generation Trekkers - Vol. 2" by Phil Farrand (Dell Paperbacks) "Ranks and Uniforms of Federation Starfleet" by Kasey K. S. (With the exception of the word Klingon itself, which phonetically is actually "tlhIngan".) This book, and the two audio tapes from Simon and Schuster Audiobooks titled "Conversational Klingon" and "Power Klingon" are very highly recommended to anyone role-playing a Klingon, or to GM's wishing to include Klingons in adventures. Each provides insight into the Klingon language, and also gives details to the social interaction on Quo'noS and between fellow Klingons. "Power Klingon" even includes some information on Klingon mating rituals. =============================================================== OTHER INFORMATION ----------------- This "Second Edition" is based on work from older versions: ----------------------------------------------------------- The "First Editions" of these files came from Eric Phillips in two different "printings": "Trek for GURPS" (available in one part from the rec.arts.startrek.current archives) [herein called the "first printing"], and another, four-part version: GURPS: Star Trek - Part One: Overview, Part Two: Trek Tech, Part Three: Races, and Part Four: Starfleet [herein called the "second printing"]. I used both of these articles, and kept the format from the "second printing". I edited in material from both versions, and have also included quite a lot of material from my own campaigns. MANY thanks go to Eric Phillips for his pioneering work in the first editions of these rules in order to bring you the current edition. Eric has also graciously added some new material of his own to this edition, and has "looked over my shoulder" so to speak, as I presented the new second edition and second printing. Anyone wishing to contact him may do so at: z600282a@bcfreenet.seflin.lib.fl.us "Eric Phillips". More new material has been added to the "second printing" of the "second edition". Fine details were added to many of the races in both the "Races" and "Aliens" sections. "Trek Tech" has been expanded to six sections: Phasers, Transporters, Medical Equipment 1 and 2, Medicine & Drugs, and Miscellaneous, all of which were refined and re-edited. The skills sections were totally revamped to agree with GURPS: Space (2nd Edition). The Starfleet sections were re-edited to agree with the changes in the skills sections. There are more characters in the new "NPC'S" sections, and much more. The divisions of this sourcebook into sections and parts was due to the fact that many e-mail and net servers use different posting protocols than others. Also, since some groups use a 65 character limit on line length, this entire sourcebook has been purposely edited to be no more than 64 characters long on any one line. Any comments on the reasons for this should be sent to the editor. Design help came quite literally from around the world, thanks in part to the Internet and Usenet. For all of their help in suggesting new rules, new advantages and disadvantages, and all of the other fun gaming stuff, I would like to thank: Thomas Barnes Chris Beiting Keith Bissett Wayne Bretton I. I would like to take this space to give my extreme thanks and praise to Chris Beiting (beiting@vax.ox.ac.uk) and to Gary Monroe Sarli (gms0002@jove.acs.unt.edu) for their extremely helpful ideas and assistance in the compiling and editing of the new "Second Printing" of the "Second Edition". Thanks Guys! You -earned- this extra acknowledgement! Enjoy this work, and as the Klingons say: "'IwlIj jachjaj!"
