Elemental: Earth Spells by Dennis Payne Since the earth elementalists seemed to lack spells, I've adapted others and created a few new ones. Many of the spells were developed for and underground campaign and may not be suitable outside of that setting. Level One: Sand Shield (effects as shield spell) A swirling field of sand forms in front of the wizard. The sand moves to block attacks against the wizard. Stone Glow (effects as light spell but cannot be directed against a creature and the material component is some glow moss) This spell causes all earth within the area of effect to glow giving equivalent to torchlight. The area of effect moves with the caster. Level Two: Gartheren's Cage Range: 5 yards/level Components: V,S Duration: 2 turns/level Casting Time: 2 Area of Effect: Special Saving Throw: Special A cage of earthen bars raises to cover the area of effect. The spell covers a maximum area of eight 10' x 10' x 10' cubes. Creatures along the edges may make a saving throw vs. spell to jump free before the cage is fully formed. Creatures trapped within are free to move about the area and fire projectiles. A successful strength check with a -5 penalty will break a large enough section to free the creature. Pillar of Earth (similar to levitate) Components: V,S Area of Effect: 5' diameter area of ground Saving Throw: None The wizard can cause the affected area of ground to raise and lower its height. The ground cannot sink below its original height. A creature attempting to use a missile weapon from the moving terrain suffers a -2 penalty to the attack roll if the caster is causing the area to change height. When the height is constant no penalty occurs. Crossbow can be cocked from atop the pillar. Note: I never decided what would happen if the ground was still raised when the duration runs out. Sandstorm (as Priest spell obscurement) Sand flies all around the area of effect obscuring all vision. Level Three: Earthen Sphere (similar to Leomund's Tiny Hut) When this spell is cast the wizard creates an unmoving hollow sphere of dirt around his person. The dirt slides out of the way to allow anyone to enter or leave the sphere without harm, but if the spellcaster is removed from it, the spell dissipates. Hurricane force winds and greater do not destroy it. The fields is not transparent making combat difficult although missiles, weapons, and most spell effects cause the dirt to move aside. The material component is a piece of a stalagmite. Level Four: Gartheren's Sand Form Range: 0 Components: V Duration: 2 rounds/level Casting Time: 4 Area of Effect: The caster Saving Throw: None The caster body and equipment transforms into a body of sand. The caster gains an AC of 3 and a move of 12 with a burrowing of 1. If cast while in water the body turns to mud giving a move of 6 and swim of 3. A pseudopod can be formed to attack opponents for 2-16 points of damage. On a successful attack the caster can begin suffocating the creature. Suffocating creatures suffer 1-8 points of damage per round and will die in five rounds, but can still attack the mage. The caster can do nothing else while suffocating someone. Spells cannot be cast in this form and speech is difficult to form. The spell cannot be prematurely ended by the wizard.
