SPHERE ASSIGNMENT FOR PRIESTS by Yaroslav BlueStar As it is stated in PHB2E, every Cleric is granted either major access to certain spheres (all spell levels), or minor (up to 3rd), or none at all. It was suggested then that DMs choose appropriate spheres for every deity in their campaigns. What I didn't like about it, was the maximum level accessible in case of "minor access" - I believe, any number, not necessary 3, would fit. More, I find it is natural to change this limits as Cleric grows in levels. Finally I researched the following scheme. Every deity has a list of the spheres it finds most suitable for their Clerics, arranged from the most favorable to the least. Take, for example, a Cleric of a Love and Beauty deity. The list would look like the following: Charm Healing Divination Thought Time Luck Wards and so on, ending (probably) with Combat and War. Then we take the spell progression for the Cleric of that deity. Let's assume he's 1st level and has 15 Wis, so he's got 2 spells on 1st level. Thus, he has access to the 1st level spells to Charm (#1 on the list) and Healing spells. Upon attaining 2nd level, he gets one more 1st level spell - this time it would be Divination sphere. When it comes to 3rd level, he gets 2nd level Charm spells, and so on. The spell progression always determines how much spheres he currently has access to, and the list contains this spheres. This way, a Cleric Generation System is built, and any existing deity may be easily adopted for it. There is an obvious problem that Clerics become much less powerful - especially on first levels. Myself, I find this class a bit overpowered, and so that makes sense. As a possibility, some spheres may be "always granted" (Charm in case of our deity, Healing for Mishakal and so on), and that helps.
