I would even go so far as to allow macintosh line breaks to be read
in and wrote out.  '\r' is Mac, '\n' is unix, and DOS is a combinaton
of the two.  BBEdit is a nice example of an editor that does it,
unfortunately it is available only for the Macintosh.
